However, I’m a Tree, the debut album from Chronik, is an enjoyable, musical experience that illustrates the artist’s mastery of sound and space. Piano takes the fore throughout many of the album’s songs, but is constantly aware of the musical space in which it operates. Each note seems a song unto itself, for they seldom flow into each other. The poignant ivories sound lightly upon the music’s subtle soundscapes. Although it may seem inaccessible at first, song for song the album contains a subtle cohesiveness. On tracks like “Tape in My Mind” and “Save Me,” the piano creates warm, dulcet sounds set amidst cathartic atmospheres. Moreover, the vocals in “Save Me” and “Counting Days” also humanize an already poignant music experience. In a way, the album’s beauty arises from its brevity. Songs like “Hand Shed” and “No Move” succeed by doing more with less; in even shorter tracks like “Labirinth,” the terseness creates its own poignacy. Simplicity also manifests itself here, as evidenced not only by the album’s title, but by the general nature of the music. With a title as simple and candid as I’m a Tree, one's mind is naturally drawn to themes of solitude and the great outdoors. To this end, the glacial pace of the album, the slowly-developed soundscapes, and the spread-out piano notes seem relevant and palpable; they also allow an organic, inviting atmosphere to grow within the music, especially in songs like “Hand Shed” and “Save Me.” More importantly, it seems that all the record’s songs contribute to this atmosphere. This suggests that, regardless of their accessibility, all the songs have equal importance to the impact of the album as a whole—an observation that only underscores the unity and cohesion of I’m a Tree. At around forty minutes in length, there is a lot to like on this record despite the minimal approach. Although the creed of much ambient music is to do more rather than less, few artists seem to manage to compose a warm, spacious atmosphere so well and efficiently. This is to say that, even though the music sounds distant and ambient, it never appears drawn-out, which is important because a lot of this kind of music often has the potential to devolve into unfocused forays that tend to bore the listener. Overall, ambient fans should find joy with I’m a Tree. For music fans that value beauty, brevity, and a becalming musical atmosphere, I’m a Tree comes strongly recommended.
