It's better than Vol. 2, but not as good as Vol. 1. This album includes a couple of leftover tracks from Kaiser and Lindley's 1991 trip to Madagascar with a digital recorder, several more recorded when the Shanachie label returned to Madagascar in 1995, and a few recorded while the musicians were touring America. Madagascar music tends to have a light, acoustic feel that reminds me more of the Caribbean than of other African music. The tracks here are full of traditional instruments native to the island, like the harp-like sounds of the tubular valiha and box-shaped marovany, and the guitar-like kabosy. Several musicians here, such as D'Gary, Haja, and Johnny, have adapted marovany music to the guitar (and in Johnny's case, the bass). Most of the greats are here: Dama Mahaleo, Tarika Sammy, Rossy, D'Gary. D'Gary and Johnny are as good as any guitarists you are ever likely to hear. If you have any interest at all in world music and have not listened to Madagascar music yet, you are seriously missing out. I love the sound, and only wish that more new Madagascar music was being released in America. The "World Out of Time" series are the best available introduction to the range of music coming from the island.
