The set’s a strong blend of soulful fusion and 80s groove — just the kind of record you might expect when turning the Rick James name on the cover towards a more instrumental sound. But that doesn’t mean that the whole album’s instrumental — as Jean Carn sings on one cut, and Keely Curtis on another. And although Bobby’s work on alto, tenor, and soprano sax is pretty nice, it’s almost the keyboard work of Bernard Wright that really makes this album great — as the set’s almost an extension of his classic GRP sessions from the same time! 　　Robert Philip Militello, better known as Bobby Militello, Bob Militello, or Bobby M. An excellent reed player who is underrated, Bobby Militello brings back the spirit of Paul Desmond when he performs with the Dave Brubeck Quartet. After playing locally in Buffalo, he toured with Maynard Ferguson (1975-1979). Militello freelanced in Buffalo (1981-1984) and Los Angeles (1984-1992), playing with the Bill Holman and Bob Florence Orchestras. Bobby Militello, who has recorded with Holman, Florence, Ferguson, and Charlie Shoemake, among others, has played on and off with Brubeck since 1983 (usually alternating with Bill Smith) and has led several of his own albums for Positive. 　　‘Blow’, originally released in 1982, is a jazz-funk / R&B project on which Rick James presented jazz-saxophonist Bobby M (Militello), who played with Maynard Ferguson and Dave Brubeck. Also grammy award winner Marcus Miller is playing on this album. Miller is best known as bass guitarist who played with e.g. Miles Davis, Luther Vandross and David Sanborn and naturally his own projects. The combination of the sound of Rick James, jazz-saxophonist Bobby Militello & Marcus Miller brings this album an unique mix of disco-funk & jazz!
