Mostly a compilation of songs recorded during the 1990s from Escape (Rock Records and Tapes) and Pure Tracy EMI Taiwan), it is nevetheless a timely release that encapsulates the essence of Tracy's commendable efforts during that era. Sweet Orange mostly showcases Tracy's collaborations with Martin Nagano as her co-producer, an influence which has continued up to her latest release in 1998 - Crazy for Love (Universal Music). A notable new song, previously unreleased is Heart Beat, the fourth track of the CD, co- produced by Keiichi Takahashi, Tracy herself, and Martin Nagano. Tracy Huang is one artiste which has evolved and stayed relevant over the years. From the sugary sweet image in the 1970s (Feelings and Mississippi by EMI Singapore), she has matured to become an individual of many dimensions and depth. Not afraid to always venture into new styles, she has set high standards that others can only dream of following. She has ventured into techno-pop music with a South Asian influence (Gravity), Japanese grunge music with a Mandarin twist (So Near Yet So Far Away), and pure new age music but with that Tracy Huang trademark vocals. The songs in Sweet Orange display the dimensions and depth of Tracy in ways that only a talented and creative artiste is capable of undertaking. From the grungy and pleasantly listenable Bizarre Love Triangle, to the sweet sounding and melodic Close to You, and the most commendably trendy and cool Heart Beat, Tracy amazes her listeners with her ability to sing in many styles. I especially like Heart Beat. It is a very uplifting number, sung in a style which I do not think Tracy has attempted before. It begins with a slightly muffled intro, and then breaks into a lively samba with an extremely listenable and contemporary beat. Tracy's vocal prowess is displayed throughout the song blending in with a playful exuberance that is extremely refreshing and catchy. I like all the songs in this CD. My only grouse is with the design of the red CD sleeve. It looks very good but it seems to be taken from Pure Tracy, filtered, and transplanted here. And, there are no pictures of Tracy in the CD booklet besides the one on the cover. This seems a great pity, given the tremendous effort undertaken to produce what is otherwise an excellent album. All in all, top marks to Tracy for her efforts, both as a producer and artiste. We look forward to many more albums along this vein. (Reviewed by Poh Lee)
