Having been the home of some of the greatest composers in music history such as Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Johann Strauss and many more, the cities outstanding musical heritage has been preserved right to the present day. Vienna’s magical spell over classical composers has remained unbroken and for centuries classical music has been following a strict tradition. This continuity and observation of strict rules has been respected up until now.
　　On the 23rd of June 1980, Richie Ulmer, singer and songwriter of My Excellence, was born in Vienna, Austria the very heart of classical music and culture in Europe. For his 4th birthday he received a present of a grand piano from his grandfather, which he found out later was custom built by Conrad Graf some 200 years ago for Beethoven. Following tradition, Richie began studying classical piano and year after year Vienna’s classical heritage began to make a strong impression on him. Fascinated by the magic of sonatas, fugues, piano concertos and symphonies of the world’s greatest classical composers, Richie began working on his dream of joining those ranks one day.
　　It didn’t take long before Richie started winning some of Vienna’s biggest composition contests. But, right then, when everything seemed to be set in stone and Richie’s classical career seemed within reach, a day came that was about to change Richie’s life forever. Richie went to hear Oasis playing live in Vienna. Standing there he experienced a whole new world of music that seemingly didn’t follow any strict rules. It was music that breathed the spirit of Punk and almost instantly Richie fell in love with the band and their guitar music. “I was standing there and was simply absorbed by the band’s energy and attitude” he says. “They just stood there, played their music and didn’t seem to care one little bit whether the crowd was pleased or not – the band didn’t try to fit at all, they just had it their way.” For Richie it was this very moment that set the ball rolling. “I just knew that this aura of freedom that surrounded this band was something I was going to search for and I realized it standing right there and listening to their music. Imagine the faces of all my friends when I explained them that from now on I was going to play electric guitar and look for a drummer” Richie recalls with a smile.
　　And so he forgot about his piano and studied for hours on end his new instrument, an Epiphone guitar, he bought the very next morning, one that looked just like Noel Gallagher’s. He set up a band, wrote songs and emerged into a whole new world of music. Vienna’s baroque rock clubs with chandeliers and graffiti on the walls became his new home.
　　“At the very beginning this new journey wasn’t easy for me at all. When you are 13 years old and you start off as a songwriter, you definitely run into danger of trying too hard to sound like someone who you admire. It takes time to grow up and to find your true inner self, musically. First, you have to try out a lot of things before you come back and create something new. Something that reflects you, like a musical fingerprint”, Richie says.
　　Richie didn’t rush it but took the time to grow as a songwriter. Playing show after show with his own band, he found out that the world of Rock and Pop was not giving him all the satisfaction he was craving for and so he started to rediscover his roots. In the evenings he found himself playing piano again. His iPod playlist was full of classical music and on many occasions he went to the Viennese State Opera with old friends. “I realized that I was still drawn to classical music. It was like a part of me that I never really lost or forgot. I just suddenly figured out that there is nothing wrong with being a fan of rock music while being at the same time into classical stuff. Even if some will consider this to be really freaky.”
　　And so it was only after 200 played shows, some in the line up with bands like Green Day or Lenny Kravitz, after some of his songs had received airplay and even saw some first chart successes that Richie realized what his vision for the future of classical music and his musical fingerprint would be. He decided with three of his long time friends and musicians to form ‘My Excellence’ and to work on writing a whole new chapter of classical music. This new classical music would be a fusion of two seemingly completely opposed musical worlds. It would be the biggest classical melodies arranged by a band sounding like contemporary music. It would be a fusion of two worlds he had lived and seen.
　　“The moment I started to write the first songs for My Excellence, it felt like complete freedom to me, like I had always been supposed to do that” Richie says. “This very moment you find your place and own sound as a songwriter is one of the most rewarding ones in your life.” What Richie describes as his own musical fingerprint is to take a classical melody as lead vocal and to build a song around it. “This was a huge challenge because if you take one of Mozart’s greatest melodies and you use it as your lead vocal melody in the verse, you have to come up with a bridge and chorus that will be able to stand beside Mozart’s melody or even top it”, he says.
　　For two years My Excellence worked on their debut album "Pomp's Not Dead", conjured the spirits of Mozart and Bach and now present their very own Punk as homage to the geniuses of classical music. Listening to the album is like taking a trip back to times when Mozart’s attitude equally fascinated and shocked Vienna and the whole world. On this album indie guitars fuse with political lyrics, drum grooves melt with sonatas and distortions reveal strings. After centuries of musical tradition and greatness realised, Vienna presents itself as birth place of a new and unheard sound. Two worlds clash into each other because all rules can be broken. Two worlds whose fusion no one has ever heard before.
