In mid-2023, after Ashe had walked away from the spotlight and began to question if she was ever going to do music again, she was invited to attend a no-strings-attached writing session with fellow singer/songwriter Suki Waterhouse, "I showed up to the session and it was just the most incredible feeling in the world, I realized that I do love this still" she said. The day after the writing session, "Please Don't Fall In Love With Me" was written, and in a few weeks she had written about half-dozen songs. Ashe enlisted studio duo Collin Pastore and Jake Finch to co-produce Willson, recording much of the album in a backyard studio near Nashville's Woodbine neighbourhood.
