It is not the memories themselves that are important, but the way we connect them: we tangle, we weave, we classify by improbable, sometimes unheard intervals. Selvedges are crossed and paths are traced. Our attention is drawn to the noise heard just behind us. Things' memories are forming a time capsule. We build a memorial and sound structure by piling one layer of the present on top of another. It is a landscape with immediate depth to which our ears remain attentive. (words by Frederic Tentelier) SETH NEHIL Seth Nehil is a visual, performance, and sound artist. He started to work with sound around 1990 using found objects and instruments, old records, reel-to-reel machines, discarded magnetic tape, and other detritus. His music for tapes and instruments is a descendant of the tape-music experiments of the 1950s. The three quiet confused pieces of Tracing the Skins of Clouds (Kaon, 1998) were the manifesto of his chamber music for found objects and instruments. Nehil centers his sound constructions upon the topographical contour of an immense plain, what he refers to as "a balanced field." He also worked with N D magazine from 1995-2000 as a writer and artistic contributor, and is currently the editor of FO(A)RM magazine. He continues collaborations with John Grzinich, Olivia Block and Michael Northam in sound, performance, and organization. BRUNO DUPLANT Bruno Duplant is a prolific composer and a musician living in the north of France. He has collaborated with many musicians around the globe and has also made solo works. His recordings have been published by various labels including Elsewhere, Another Timbre, Wandelweiser, Ftarri, B-Boim, Diafani, Notice Recordings, Suppedaneum, Unfathomless, Dinzu Artefacts, Aussenraum, Moving Furniture, Verz, Mappa, Hemisphäreの空虚, Falt, among others. For Duplant, composing and playing music is similar to imagining, creating, and sometimes decomposing new spaces/realities, and new entities. But it is also a reflection on memory, not the historic one, but memories of things, spaces, and moments. His music, strongly inspired by the writing (Francis Ponge, Gaston Bachelard, among others) and some artists/musicians (John Cage, Luc Ferrari, Eliane Radigue, Rolf Julius), is imbued with a sweet melancholy. His photographic practice and writing (poetry), for some time, join his musical practice, in many crossings, for many exchanges.
