"The common denominator between Gwoka, jazz and soul, is the drum," Schwarz-Bart explains. "The word Gwoka comes from n'goka, a word from central Africa that means drums." Jacques has a unique perspective being the son of Simone Schwarz-Bart, a mother from Guadeloupe and André Schwarz-Bart, a father that survived the Holocaust, both of them groundbreaking, award-winning novelists. He has lived on several continents, and is linking Gwoka tradition to jazz, Brazilian and other music from the African Diaspora to create his own universe.
