A flawed live recording. Note the discomforting trouble in the brass near the end of the 1st movement. The draggy tutti in the end of the scherzo section of the 3rd movement is, to say the least, unfavorable. The finale works best, but one may think it is too obsessive at times. This is not a big-boned Bruckner in essence. We see Rattle trying to leave his personal imprints on the Berlin orchestra, but I suggest EMI release some more deliberate studio recordings for Rattle first, especially on Bruckner. Rattle's not ugly, but I am bored with CD covers of his heads. He's yet to prove himself a qualified Brucknerian. Fortunately, the Berliners seem to have that patience.
