Coulter Leslie, lead guitarist for Britpop group, Altspeak, greets me outside the band’s rehearsal studio along Elliot Avenue. Tailored well from head to toe with sharp eyes, he gives me a firm handshake, pointing out where to park and telling me that front man Iggy Faus will be arriving soon.
　　Faus appears mod with a debonair smile, dressed in casual black. I ask if he’s worried about fashion statements. He quips, "No fashion statement..., just clean, cool, and lazy." Within seconds of exchanging pleasantries, the trio is jovial and down to earth.
　　"I’ll be relieved when we’re worried about fashion," drummer Will Hallauer jokes.
　　For now these guys only worry about the delivery of their dynamic, melodic sound.
　　"We book from month-to-month," says Faus, while lighting up, at the same time fighting allergies. "We work hard at finding a bill that’s a good fit for us."
　　Altspeak is humble and unpretentious. The band defines its European beat music as an "orgy of 1990s Britpop and contemporary indie rock bands."
　　It’s Up To You, Altspeak’s debut, will be released online July 2nd and hits Seattle record stores July 12th. Lead single "Little Things", cuts like a knife, getting first in line as a live favorite.
　　In their roomy rehearsal studio, the three charge through "Little Things." It’s a rave-up straight to the heart and an adrenaline rush, punctuated by Leslie’s piercing guitar strokes and the staccato pop of Hallauer’s drumming. During the song’s genesis, Hallauer suggested giving the number some rockabilly flare and Faus agreed, turning it into one of the album’s more entertaining tracks.
　　In 2005, Faus’ position as a software programmer for Microsoft transplated him to Seattle from Barcelona, Spain and he brought with him a treasure trove of songs. A listing he posted on Craigslist for a drummer led him to Hallauer, a Seattle rock veteran active in several bands, including critically acclaimed group, The Turn-Ons. Leslie would follow, rounding out the band’s present incarnation. Album producer, Erik Blood, also of The Turn-Ons, contributes bass on the road, which Faus describes as an integral part of the group’s energy [see sidebar].
　　As far as influences go, Altspeak is all over the map. Leslie says he’s a fan of guitarists Johnny Marr, formerly of The Smiths (and now Modest Mouse), Paul Weller, famous for The Jam, and Bernard Butler, formerly of Suede.
　　Faus grew up listening to artists as varied as John Lennon, Prince before he got weird, and even R&B great Stevie Wonder.
　　As a whole, It’s Up To You has the distinction of a breakthrough hit. It’s up there with watershed albums such as Oasis’ Definitely Maybe, The Strokes’ Is This It, or Coldplay’s Parachutes.
　　Some of the more enduring songs are arena-sized anthems like "Be a Star" and "Tonight." Distinguished by its orchestral flourishes, swooping guitar lines, and shades of shoegaze, many cuts are laced with with references to Faus’ two-year-old daughter, Lola.
　　As a masterpiece of Britpop gems, it’s surprising the disc was produced in Seattle.
　　But Faus contends, "Seattle is very European. It’s very open minded like Spain."
