The focus of this compilation is largely on the labels and musicians who have recorded and sold music through independent means or have showed a particularly independent spirit in the way their music is released. At the heart of our story are the the biggest independent labels of the last 50 years: Beggars Banquet, Rough Trade, Domino, Ninja Tune, XL Recordings, Mute, 4AD and of course, Warp. It should be noted that the narrative we have here is not intended as a completely comprehensive guide to every single aspect of British independent music. We acknowledge that there are gaps - our story starts just on the brink of the ‘60s, while British folk music, very early electronic music, and British reggae, dub and sound system culture are perhaps not given all the attention they merit. Bleep’s guide is one that is tied to our history as a company and the kind of labels, artists and movements that have been most influential in our development. There is also a greater focus on artists and labels who have achieved great commercial success and influence despite – or perhaps because of – the fact they are operating outside the major label system. Our track selection also contains a hefty amount of music from the last ten to twenty years, showing just how alive and kicking the spirit of independent British music continues to be.
