This 47-minute improvisation features Flynt on electric violin backed by the Indian drone from C.C. Hennix's tambura. It is a long, contemplative piece closer in sound and spirit to the two-CD set Your Are My Everlovin'/Celestial Power than the collection Graduation. The violin has not been used often in this kind of setting (Lakshmi Shankar is one close exception) and Flynt sure is one inspired performer. His plaintive lines emulate the microtonal charm of the sitar to a surprising extent. In some places, it seems the musician can't make up his mind on what musical vocabulary to use, shifting from minimalist lines to Indian phrasing to frenetic hoedown fiddling -- experimental raga. But for these occasional moments of luminescence, the piece takes the listener through flat passages. Sound quality can also be tiresome after half an hour. Is Flynt an avant-gardist or just a trippy freak? You'll have a hard time deciding on the count of C Tune. If you are interested in the work of this unusual artist, start with Graduation and Other New Country and Blues Music; it gives a broader picture.
