The third time hearing it I realized my god I love this sugary folk! I've calmed down a little since. But really, this is great. A sophisticated, well-recorded eclectic collection of folk pop from the early 70's that has a dreamy, friendly, unpretentious quality. Even though they heavily use an ARP and at one point dig out a sitar, it doesn't sound as dated to me as most folk from this era - in fact it reminds me a lot of some of the best of the dream-folk revival from the mid-to-late 80s (Hugo Largo, the occasional good song by Downy Mildew, early His Name Is Alive, etc.). They incorporate the synthesizer and multiple vocal tracks into something rich, moody and magical - with warbling synth modulation complimenting Margaret Morgan's amazing slow vibrato, filled out by graceful acoustic guitars. And the bass guitar on "Rusty's House" has to be mentioned because it's just so unbelievably melodic. They sing mainly about the abstract qualities of nature, and inhaling a little nature while visiting friends, which helps to give the album a nice relaxed and simple feel even though the arrangements are surprisingly complex. "Our House in Hanalei" is the only song I still have a hard time with - its faux broken English indicating their identification with simple Islanders' confusion about their changing landscape. The accent also returns for "Waipoo", and it's unnecessary and a little insipid. Sometimes Margaret's vocals can verge on that nerd chick sound that bugs me so much about Joni Mitchell, who's an obvious influence. But in general the album is a well-crafted gem that manages to be both a product of its time, while in many ways ahead of it.
