Von Karajan actually recorded this symphony once before, a good performance. But when he returned to it for a digital retread, he simply let himself go and played the pants off the piece. 　　肖斯塔科维奇《第十交响曲》，是一部对于老肖和对于整个苏联音乐界和整个艺术界都有着极其深远影响的作品。
　　据肖斯塔科维奇自己所说：这部作品是在1953年夏秋之际疾速写成的。这时的苏联，正处于斯大林死后的膀惶和真空时期。一些艺术家们纷纷发表了要求自由、民主和一些具有反思性质的作品，肖斯塔科维奇第十交响曲就是音乐界中最先问世的大作，因此它被视为是斯大林死后最能代表新苏联的音乐作品。
　　肖斯塔科维奇的这部作品一问世，就在国内、国际引起了极大地震动。纷纷对老肖的第十进行猜测想弄清它的真正含义。苏联的作曲家协会连续三天召开肖斯塔科维奇第十交响曲的讨论会，一些重要的报纸杂志也发表文章进行探讨，虽有方方面面的批评，但最终的结论还是高度评价这部作品。海外对此曲的热情也相当高，世界各地争相演出，也进行评论：认为这部作品是肖斯塔科维奇在斯大林死后，对过去政策的一种反判心而既疾笔完成的。
　　肖斯塔科维奇在接受记者访问时，自己对《第十交响曲》作了解释：“我想表现的是，现代人强烈热爱和平，反对战争，普天下人类的使命不是破坏，而是创造这类思想与希望”，并拒绝再作除此以外的任何解释。仔细聆听老肖的“第十”，您一定会感觉到一种难以排遣的灰暗和阴森，首乐章就整个在 e 小调上进行，把你笼罩在暗淡的气氛中。第二乐章年可以感觉到，它所描绘的就是斯大林，那是一股顽强、险恶的旋风。三乐章优美而又哀挽，末乐章露处了些微亮，传达了胜利的喜悦，但似乎还是不足以一举胜利。
　　这部“第十”是卡拉扬所唯一指挥过的肖斯塔科维奇的交响曲，老肖的十五部交响曲，卡拉扬只指挥一部，是非常值得思索的。而为了荃释好这部作品，卡拉扬还特意到西柏林一趟，去和老肖亲自见面和沟通。
