关于My Young Man

My Young Man was written in memory of Kate's grandparents. Kate's grandfather died from emphysema he developed working as a coal miner, and her grandmother was there helping him through the last of his days. The song was accompanied by the legendary Grimethorpe Colliery Band. There is a strong tradition of brass bands among the coal miners of England. During the Margaret Thatcher years the mines were closed and communities were devastated with job losses. The Grimethorpe band won the National Brass Band Championship on 17 October 1992, less than a week after their mine had been closed and they had all lost their jobs. The movie "Brassed Off" was based around them.
