Brain, born just outside Newcastle, had been singing with a re-formed line up of Geodie around the North-East, when he was asked to audition for AC/DC last month; Brain was recommended to the group by their producer Robert John Lange. The group felt that Brain fitted both as a singer and in terms of personality and, having now joined the group, Brain will be rehearsing solidly with them for the next few weeks prior to going into the studios at the beginning of May to record the follow up to the highly successful "Highway To Hell" Album. When the band arrived at the airport in Nassau, a customs inspector seized Malcom`s guitar. "Malcolm pulled in it off him," Johnson recalled,"and went,' You fuckin`...' Australian heavy rock group AC/DC has zoomed to number one on the UK album charts with a new album only six days after its release.

(In mid-April, AC/DC set up shop at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas, although not without a good flash of warrior attitude. When the band arrived at the airport in Nassau, a customs inspector seized Malcom`s guitar. "Malcolm pulled in it off him," Johnson recalled,"and went,' You fuckin`...' Fortunately, somebody held him back. Producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who had down the honors on Highway To Hell and was on his way of becoming one of the most successful console doctors in the record industry, already knew how to make pannoramic thunder from the bone-hard simplicity of AC/DC`s sound. "With AC/DC, you`d just Malcolm Young`s guitar on one side and Angus on the other," Lange told me in 1987 interview. But he noted, "I always thought the guys in AC/DC were masters of slow rock. They could play inhaif-time and sound so much more powerful." AC/DC were basically a blues band playing with heavy metal might and R&B restraint, throwing vocal and guitar lighting over locked, mostly mid-tempo grooves. There is no dedication, no mention of his name. But the Young`s determination to rock, no matter what, was the supreme salute. "There`s been an audience waiting for an honest rock `n` roll band to come along and lay it on `em," Scottsaid to me, when I interviewed him for Circus magazine in Deember, 1978.
