Me:mo – Peking Scene (Plop/Mu-Nest/Nature Bliss)
By innerversitysound April 5, 2011
Me:Mo has an incredible mix of threads running through Peking Scene at once it is acoustic guitar work, worked against bright electronics triggered and patterned for the composition. The electronics often emits in waves of almost exotica like quality, sustaining it’s melodic resonance while either subtle beat or glitch like residue of the guitar feed another layer through the tracks. It as a subtle hallucinatory feel to it, some tracks taking the vocals into dream territory and the general sensibility is of an optimistic fluid landscape of dreams. It could be described as an electro-acoustic album, heavy on the effects and carefully composed haphazard carefree summer breeze of a modern China on cool-aid and over indulging on Tropicália.
Then just to blow you away there is a fusion of French chanson with ‘radio moment’, without the vocals saved a scratch of a sample and the confusion of the replica is an exciting simulacra. There are crisp electronic beat structures in ‘I also yearn’ mixed with acoustic guitar and heavily worked out sophoric washes of tonal color melding all over the foreground and background. It is awash with vibrant potency, in a subtle relaxed sort of way.
This eleven track album by Zhai Ruixin describes a Peking scene, in includes sounds of the city, birds, people, traffic and while the guitar has a jazz influenced palatte it’s electronics are of a fluid modernity for people familiar with early Aphex twin yet with a greater optimism in attitude to the world and the residue of a popular brush hanging around the avant-now construction. Shimmering wonder, enough fresh play and lashings of playful talent swimming in a sea of colored sound, high on life.
