听Dead Factory & Atum《Strefa》

Stop me if I’ve already mentioned this before. The chances are I have. Lately I’ve had this weird feeling that my life is on a continual loop and things keep happening the same time over and over again. Déjà vu? Worse than that. Déjà vu multiplied tenfold. Then some more. Worse still it’s like Groundhog Day but with the smirking fucking unfunny Bill Murray in it. The Beast of Prey record label is one of the greatest record labels, not only from Poland, but in the rest of the world…ever. See…I know I’ve written that somewhere else. I just can’t remember when. Or in what context. Actually I do know the context because I would only mention Beast of Prey in a review. No use dropping that in anywhere else. If someone asked me what the weather was like I couldn’t say ‘ very fucking cold but Beast of Prey it could be worse’ as that wouldn’t make any logical sense. Mind you with some of the retarded mongs I hang around with they would probably accept that as a pretty sane reply. And if you think this off kilter opening paragraph is strange wait until you read the main body of the review.
Praise for the Beast of Prey record label: I was very, very fortunate to be writing, stop sniggering at the back, for another website when the Beast of Prey label first got off the ground. They kindly sent in their releases for review and I was duly blown away by them all. It’s safe to say that everything they have released has been a unique aural experience that rekindles many fond memories whenever I go back and play them. As the label grew their packaging and utter love and devotion for the music put many more recognised and well respected labels to shame. This still continues today and every release they bring out is a treasured moment in time. And in case you are wondering, because I would be asking the same thing if I was reading this, I do actually buy their releases which I can’t get in to review. Like I said elsewhere…the Beast of Prey record label is one of the greatest record labels, not only from Poland, but in the rest of the world…ever.
‘Strefa’ is a split release featuring the Polish acts Dead Factory and Atum spread over eight tracks and 50+ minutes of music. Packaged in typically Beast of Prey style it comes in a grey, printed cardboard on which two pockets are placed. In the pockets there are two photographs chosen from six different ones and a steel mesh net and the release is hand numbered with only 213 copies released of the cdr. As with all Beast of Prey releases not only will this sell out quickly but it will also become another highly sought after collectors item.
‘Strefa’ in Polish translates as ‘Zone’ in English. The ‘zone’ represented by these acts is of a seemingly gone to seed and reclaimed by nature piece of Industrial wasteland devoid of human presence. Dead Factory get the ball rolling with four tracks of Dark Industrial Ambience. For theirs is a truly lonely place. Through the claustrophobic sensations and isolation induced visions they recreate an area totally devoid of life that is slowly rotting away. A murky residue surrounds the broken concrete and rusting metal that swims in polluted detritus and water. Nothing lives here in this wasteland. What was once a vibrant and full of energy place has been returned to nature soiled and contaminated. Touched and tainted by the hand of man. The deserted buildings home only to rats and the whispering ghosts of a once cherished past. Dead Factory place you in the centre, at the very heart, of the decay that is happening all around and gives you a panoramic vision of what will eventually be. This incredibly powerful music sweeps you along the streets of darkness and offers no glimmer of hope for the future. The end of all civilisation is nigh and this is what it sounds like. Atum, who released the highly acclaimed ‘Agorafobia’ recording, contribute the last four tracks on this release. Continuing along in the same vein they create an alien and desolate environment where the air is constantly chilly and the winds howl amongst the rubble. An angelic choir heralds in the heavens accepting the souls of the newly departed. The sounds are colourfully layered with a variety of pitches and tones that add to the atmospheres created. Add in some fragmented effects and the distant voice of the last remnants of humanity and what you have left is an exceptional sojourn into deepest and highly tensed black ambience.
Groundhog day part 2. But this is only my imagination at play here. I’m visualising what the music has created and written that down. It is only my interpretation. Your experience may be totally different to mine. Hear what you want to hear and visualise as you so want. What anyone hearing this release will agree on is that ‘Strefa’ is an excellent example of Industrial /Dark Ambient that credits both acts…and of course Beast of Prey for releasing it. After all…The Beast of Prey record label is one of the greatest record labels, not only from Poland, but in the rest of the world…ever. Which rings a bell somehow.
