Bach sounding human and alive These performances are fluent, vivacious, affectionate and communicative. The opposite of dry. That Demus studied with Edwin Fischer will alert listeners to the fact that in some ways - use of the sustaining pedal, for example, and rubato -there is a hint of the traditions of earlier times in evidence here: no bad thing. There is songfulness in the phrasing and delightful differentiation of touch. These do not sound like calculated readings, and it is at times almost as if Demus is near to getting carried away with his joy at playing Bach! It sounds as if he is playing a smaller piano -certainly not a Steinway concert grand - and the instrument enhances clarity. The only reason for not awarding 5 stars is that the recording quality -while faithful enough up to mezzo forte - can become clangorous and harsh in louder sections. For the performances alone: absolutely 5 stars. Those who wish to get an idea of the beauty of the performances should sample, of Partita No 3, the Allemande, Corrente and Sarabande. Pure joy.
