The song’s narrative is that of older slaves advising a child, most likely taken away from his parents, away from those who usually guide and comfort him overwhelmed by pain and confusion. The chain yanking throughout the song represents the necessity to move on and work. The child would like to stop and cry because it doesn’t like any of what is going on, but the chain is yanking, it needs to keep on moving. There is however advice from elders in the chain line. The advice is functional, defeatist and stern: there’s nothing in our worldly or natural powers we can do about our faith, but the devil is our supernatural ally: when you’re feeling angry, vengeful or rebellious, don’t be scared of his malevolence, turn to him and he will empower you.
