在经历过一段仅追求旋律美妙节奏精彩的磨合期后,虽然全世界对那首No Woman No Cry耳熟能详,出埃及记和kaya也获得了巨大成功——但这却并不是因为“微笑的牙买加演唱会枪击事件”而被迫背井离乡的马利的初衷。他出走埃塞俄比亚,亲身体会非洲所承受的苦难,一年之后,一张总长38:02的、共有十首作品的磁带专辑面世了——这就是我们听到的这张《Survival》。
此时马利已经被诊断出癌症,但因为他热爱足球而拒绝开刀——这张专辑是作为Bob Marley & The Wailers chronology三部曲的首部推出的(后两部是《Uprising》和《Confrontation》),荣誉勋章和曼利那富有概括性的人生总结没能留住这位“一代人中才可出现一位的伟人”,他在1981年5月11号离开了人世,牙买加举国沉浸在悲痛之中。
在我所听过马利的全部十二张专辑中,本张是评价最高的——无论词曲,均已达到神作的水准。下面将我认为最经典的几首进行简短的解析,12分钟remix版本就不分析了。
So Much Trouble In The World
作为专辑的第一首歌,歌名就已经道明了本张专辑的政治主题。开首诙谐的伴奏,两次呐喊式的重复像是在呼告。然后是叙事式的歌词结构:
Bless my eyes this morning
Jah sun is on the rise once again
两句词定了全曲的悲凉风格。马利那四段式
Now they sitting on a time bomb;
Now I know the time has come:
What goes on up is coming on down,
Goes around and comes around.
及和声里的Bomb-bomb-bomb! Bomb-bomb-bomb!给出先知预言式的警告,最后在反复中歌声淡出——其寓意不言自明。
Zimbabwe
这是鼓舞人心的一首歌,前奏简短且被赋予极强的节奏感。马利整首歌的感情都十分真诚,所唱并不带有野心的煽动性,反而在高潮之后舒缓下来,极具亲和力。
歌词第一句所写很有说服力:
Every man gotta right to decide his own destiny,
And in this judgement there is no partiality.
So arm in arms, with arms, we'll fight this little struggle,'Cause that's the only way we can overcome our little trouble.
这个因果结构配合曲子的节奏感,很自然就能让听者融入到马利所营造的气氛中,而被他说服。
反复的高潮之后唯一的拔声,是在Brother, you're right这里,平地一声惊雷,感染力极强。
Top Rankin'
开首用芝加哥爵士风,整首曲子配合和声,爵士风十分明显。曲风本身是用假设反问的形式,用警告提醒的方式告诫非洲人民,点醒他们,让他们能够为自己而斗争。两段无和声清唱的内容,均有看似漫不经心的破音和假音,马利借此表达自己的中立和无奈,有怒其不争的感情夹杂其间:
They say the blood runs;
And it runs through our line,
And our hearts, heart of hearts divine, eh!
And John saw them comin', ooh! - a-with the truth
From an ancient time.
和
They don't want us to unite:
All they want us to do is keep on fussing and fighting.
They don't want to see us live together;
All they want us to do is keep on killing one another.
收尾重复,效果却和第一首明显不同,是反复的劝告
Babylon System
起调轻快而梦幻,马利的声音也夹杂迷幻,并且加入少许动物声音,仿佛令人置身大自然中。此曲想要揭露美好之后的假相,在前首的告诫之后,又引人遐想。马利和合声反复强调的那句:
Babylon system is the vampire, yeah!
Suckin' the children day by day, yeah!
实在是令人感到触目惊心,他列举的都是人人可见的事例:
Building church and university, wo-o-ooh, yeah!
Deceiving the people continually, yea-ea!
警告非洲人民不要被侵略者们带来的某些好处所蒙骗,他们该是怎样就是怎样。马利的警告十分直接:
Me say them graduatin' thieves and murderers;
Look out now: they suckin' the blood of the sufferers
揭露那些人掠夺者的本质,都是吸血鬼。
最后的呼告更是惹人流泪,反复的Tell the children the truth重复再重复,还有那声略显无力的Rebel——本首作为本张的三大最佳之一,实力不容置疑。
Survival
全碟的主打歌,曲调上是完全的雷鬼风格,节奏感极强。开场滑稽的敖敖声和马利的怒吼,像是破壳而出的那种爆发力。所连接的是无可辩驳的事实:
How can you be sitting there
Telling me that you care -
That you care?
When every time I look around,
The people suffer in the suffering
In everyway, in everywhere.
然后是极具震撼力的结论:We're the survivors, yes the Black survivors
并用大量的对比句式给出了十分强烈的冲击感,每一句都发人深醒:
some people got everything;
Some people got nothing;
Some people got hopes and dreams;
Some people got ways and means.
Some people got facts and claims;
Some people got pride and shame;
Some people got the plots and schemes;
Some people got no aim it seems!
Some people put the best outside;
Some people keep the best inside;
Some people can't stand up strong;
Some people won't wait for long.
将人间百态一网打尽,使人不得不信服他的结论。
值得一提的是,在'Cause the Father's time has come.后,马利用了神一般的声音说Some people put the best outside,这更加强了论据的影响力
本曲是全碟最耀眼的,也是我心中马利所有曲目中的前三。
Africa Unite
这首照应唱片封套。值得推敲的是,虽然封套上有四十九个国旗,但其中只有四十七个非洲国家,辛巴布韦因为政治原因存在的两面旗都在上面,正好照应其中的歌。
曲子开首是国歌调,然后是轻快的非洲土乐和近似呢喃的非洲土语。此曲叙事紧接Babylon System,表达马利对非洲人民的信任
'Cause we're moving right out of Babylon,
And we're going to our Father's land, yea-ea.
曲中反复提到孩子们,再次宣扬非洲的团结:We are the children of the Rastaman;We are the children of the Iyaman.最后的呼告,饱含期望,甚至出现少有的几次怒吼与呐喊,和歌名概念一道,都相当振奋人心。马利每次咏唱都将重音放在Unite上,偶尔又将它唱成united,语义双关。此曲在本碟经典榜中排到第三
One Drop
开曲就是马利的呐喊,然后每句都是提音,有些地方都要声嘶力竭,和声也较其它曲子多,但全曲正如歌词中所写,比较重视rap风,是战歌中的休整曲目,不算大气,但很精致耐听。
