Third Studio Album
Mariah Carey's "Music Box" album was released on August 31, 1993. It debuted at number two on the Billoard 200 chart after selling 174,000 copies and reached the number one spot fifteen weeks later. It stayed at the top for eight non-consecutive weeks and became 1994's second best selling album in the US.
"Dreamlover" was the album's first single, released on July 27, 1993. The song, produced by Mariah Carey, Dave "Jam" Hall and Walter Afanasieff, debuted at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and eventually became Mariah's seventh number one single, topping the chart for eight consecutive weeks.
"Hero," originally written for Gloria Estefan, was the second single. It stayed atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart for four weeks and was ranked five on Billboard's Year End Chart. Mariah recorded a Spanish version of the song, titled "Héroe."
Mariah's cover of Badfinger's "Without You" was released on January 23, 1994, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and remaining in the top 40 for 21 weeks. The song had a massive success accross Europe, becoming Mariah's first UK number one single.
"Anytime You Need A Friend" was released as the album's fourth single on May 31, 1994, peaking at number twelve on the Billboard Hot 100. The song featured remixes by David Cole and Robert Clivillés of C+C Music Factory, Cory Rooney and Mark Morales.
