This is not the place I think of when a band plays fast and highly melodic blackmetal with a doomy touch. The previous album "Misanthropic And Nihilist Dharma" wasn't that convincing in my eyes (or ears to be exact). But with the first tunes of "Massive Genocide, Collective Suicide... Hurting Katharsis" I already hear the great progression that is made with this new album. The previous album couldn't really keep me interested for the whole album and lacked some things, like a good production, good song writing, the balance between the aspects that filled the album and what lacked the most was to me the innovation. Don't get me wrong, I am not such a person who is always preaching about renewing and the unoriginal approach of bands towards their musical style, but sometimes it is just too boring and too predictable. But, I don't want to bad-mouth that previous effort totally, for it really contained some great passages and ideas as well. But this album rules that previous work out totally, this is exactly how things should be in this kind of melodic blackmetal with a little deathmetal touch. The production is a lot better this time, the keyboards of Eöl (known from his Elffor side-project as well, a new album is coming up, so keep your eyes open!) are not that prominent and are better layered in the music. That is the main point of the band's progression, but what shouldn't be left unmentioned is the great vocal work done by Aston, astonishing actually. It reminds me quite often to Henri Villberg from Rapture (the Finnish band, not to be confused with the Swedes with the same name) and Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth, Katatonia, Bloodbath etc.), and this leads automatically to the thing that was a point of interest as well. The band has taken a more doomy and melancholic move towards bands like Amorphis, Katatonia and Rapture, which makes the music more varied and interesting. I guess this was mainly the result of Eöl's keyboards and Aston's vocals. The last Elffor album was one of the best dark ambient releases I ever heard (although I am aware of the fact that it isn't pure dark ambient, but well?) and Eöl took many of his ideas and experiences into the music of Suffering Down. All in all the music is very well progressed and got less in the vein of Dimmu Borgir but more in Borknagar's realm for instance. Yet, the band took an original approach of playing melodic blackmetal with their doomy touch and pianos. A must for those who like the aforementioned bands!
