This release should get them on the national touring circuit. (one can only hope...) I picked this up from AMZN on its release date. First of all who is "The Soldier Thread" and what kind of music, what kind of act, what's so special? Musically they draw from Post-Rock (some of you are groaning oh noes not 20 minute epics of double-picking). The Post-Rock genre does not own them or define them. They utilized the uniqueness of Post-Rock to bring memorable, lush, songs for the audience to enjoy, to live, to feel and relate to. Most of that uniqueness comes from the song delivery talents of Justin McHugh and Patricia Lynn. (The remainder of the band are awesome too, specially the bass player - he plays aggressive like I do, love it, oops I digress). That uniqueness from Senor McHugh and Senorita Lynn (who can sound a bit like Maura Davis, but not so much on In Spades) is narrowly focused songs that have a very good chance of touching an emotion in your life. My introduction to The Soldier Thread was from a free download of "Run Run" off some music blog. Probably [...] . I immediately used my emusic subscription and picked up everything available. I focused on "Shapes". WOW. Cannon, Northeastern, Cherish Me, Run Run, Rock N Roll. There is some really great stuff there. Pick up that CD too. After you get "In Spades". So, by now you're thinking, why should I spend my hard earned dough on "In Spades"? Wouldn't you have loved to been one of the first friends in your social network to have "Boy" or The Cranberries or The Pretenders first real albums? Yes you would. "Fractions" is definitely a single. It should get airplay? Will it? Politics, meh; I hate radio. But as you get further into this album, "I Won't Stop You" will grab you, "Is it desire?" "Is it weak submission?" You'll have to decide for yourself, but I can tell you it is not some sappy weak emo song. This is a confident, highly focused piece of music. "Oxycontin" will really make you think. I have the satisfaction of knowing that I know this band's music well, but the unhappiness that you don't. Please give them a good solid listen. If you are a "Music" lover [vs a genre lover] you will enjoy this album. I guarantee that, and that's a lifetime guarantee. I don't know the band personnally. I don't live in Austin. I wasn't paid to write this. (good thing since my grammar is terrible). I just love music that is written and delivered with passion. I love the Emperor Concerto by Beethoven, I love Elliott Smith's "Everything Reminds Me of Her", I love "Where I Landed" by Denali, I love Ambulette's Version of the classic "If You Go Away"; hell, I love "FREEBIRD". And I love this Album. This CD should Chart, but we all know that's political, good old stinky boys, etc. [yes I am a Bob Lefetz reader] I hope this review helps you. And I hope you can establish a fondness for this band as I have. Here are a few links, if you like.
