Normally these types of efforts are more-or-less a complete flop, but Fire on Fire has actually managed to write some good songs and nice instrumental lines. Their guitarist doesn't totally suck either (as per the norm) so... that's nice. My biggest gripe is probably the vocals. The male vocalist especially has an unpleasantly quavery, half-yelling delivery that may offend folk fans used to the normal, pleasant fare. Female vocals are better but still blaring and quite shrill at times. In general the vocals seem to forgo any attempt at texture, which takes a lot away from the sound. Decent songwriting on most tracks, if repetitive, and FoF does actually capture some of those nice folky harmonies. My favorite track may be Assanine Race. It really illustrates what's right and wrong with this record-- the interwoven banjos and bass, plucking out a pretty, almost authentic-sounding progression, that could be so much more with some better singing and more attention to melodic writing. The lyrics are pretty dumb, if sort of fitting. Worth a listen or two, especially if you're into folk music, but probably won't be of much interest a couple of years down the line. Still, a interesting debut and commendable effort.
