With these ten new songs, the French-crooning twosome once again prove that they are not just proud of their roots in the European and American musical tradition of the last half-century, but also of their connection to contemporary trends. “Des équilibres” is a walk on a tightrope of different styles and moods which has given their tightest, most brilliant collection of songs of their career as a result. Patricia and Jaime’s beautiful sonic landscapes for 2005, which were partially revealed in their recent single “Présage de l’hiver”, are confirmed in these ten gorgeous, optimistic portraits of daily life, in which they drift away from the melancholia of their previous records. Musically, this is Jaime Cristóbal’s strongest set of songs so far, and his great inspirational moment can be clearly illustrated by mentioning his recent collaboration in French chanteuse Françoiz Breut’s new record, “Une saison volée”, for which he has contributed a song (“Ciudad del Mar”). But in fact, “Des équilibres” has been the record in which Patricia has played her most decisive role in the development and composition of the songs and also in the image and aesthetics of the band. “Des équilibres” opens a new musical path for Souvenir, in which the piano has been central to the composition of many of these exquisite, sophisticated tunes. The arrangements have been kept simple but brilliant, which has resulted in a classic record in which the elements are at the same time traditional (piano, guitar, vibes, brushed drums) and eccentric (Mini-Moog, theremin, old vinyl samples). Throughout the record Souvenir show their determination in looking for new landscapes, in abandoning the safe shore of melancholic pop. The result of this leap in the dark is a jovial, playful set of songs in which Patricia’s vocals have reached a high point in her evolution as a singer. Also, Jaime and Patricia have been helped in the recording by veteran collaborators such as drummer Paco Martínez (Australian Blonde) and bass player Pablo Jiménez (Les Tres Bien Ensemble, Pulpops, Zola...), who have helped build the strongest, most tasteful rhythm section ever featured on a Souvenir record. Last but not least, Javier Aramburu’s beautiful artwork and sleeve capture the mood of this charming record perfectly.
