Really loved the new album! Their first record in over two years. I ve done some research adn found out tht it Influenced by Cream and Jimi Hendrix(who the fak?!), the new album features some of frontman Alex Turner's most innovative and profound lyrics yet, whilst also maintaining the Arctic's core sound. Humbug' carries off where they left off in 2007. Partly produced by Queen of the Stone Age Josh Homme they return with a air of arrogance, a deserved arrogance. From as early as opener 'My Propeller' you can hear Homme's influence, with Turner and guitarist Jamie Cook seemingly having found their way down the fretboard, inducing a darker, bleaker sound. Turner groans, almost lazily 'have a spin of my propeller' before upping the ante to a disgruntled cry: 'my propeller won't spin!' They move seamlessly in to lead off single 'Crying Lightning', the most Homme influenced track on the album. Turner has a gift that not many posses, he can manipulate the music. Make it do what he wants, not what is expected, he wraps it round his little finger and plays with it. Changing the tempo and mood at will, it's one of the reasons why nobody in the UK comes close to him at the moment. 'Cornerstone' is the stand out track. Comparable to the stand out track from 'Favourite Worst...' 'Florescent Adolescent', it's slower yet a sure fire instant fan favourite. Nick O'Malley's bass and Matt Helders' snare play are joys to behold. O'Malley carries the album, thumping along it's seemingly understated, but it acts a platform for his band mates to perform on. Helders has, once again, confirmed his place as the UK's best drummer. Everything happens at double speed, with twice the intensity, even on slower track 'Secret Door'. Turner's vocals have improved drastically as well. He's always had they lyrics, now his voice seems to have matured to be able to back them up. He no longer shouts his pissy put-downs, he sings them, even occasionally crooning on as heard on 'Fire and the Thud'. At least, on the most part, he sings. On penultimate track 'Pretty Visitors', he's back to himself of 2005, asking fiercely: 'what came first? The chicken or the dickhead?' It's these sort of lyrics that are most potent in the forum of the quicker track. They're also the lyrics that stick with you longest, I found myself pondering that very question. How is that a lyric so simple, is also so elaborate? It's here that Turner excels most. 'Humbug' is outstanding throughout. A beautiful of mixture of slow, fast, dark, mellow, angry and a bit more dark. They've confirmed their status of best UK band since Oasis, and they best band out of Sheffield since....well, ever.
