Just started listening to Jónsi’s new album Go. As a gifted vocalist, Jónsi is granted the chance to experiment with his voice in different stylistic contexts and production in this album. However, in listening to Go, I find myself being more drawn to the arrangements that ring the original Sigur Rós in my eardrum. It is difficult not to associate his voice and the feeling his voice brings with the legendary Icelandic ensemble and their creations - those mythically sublime pieces that creep deep inside your body and tickle your consciousness and viscera; those otherworldly collections of acoustics that awaken recognition and resonance that seem to have been planted in you pre-born or even from a different life. No doubt, Sigur Rós has changed quite a bit both as a musical group and as an ideological icon throughout their development over the years, and the venerable yet unblemished sound they produce undergoes a challenge proposed by the ever needy music market as they gradually gained fame. The purity in their music is being tested, and the honesty dithering. Nonetheless, no matter what tomorrow’s Sigur Rós is going to be, I think we all agree that we are thankful for the unforgettably amazing experiences, both physical and spiritual, that they have brought us in their previous stages. The hardship they are going through is understandable, and I respect the choices they make. Good luck Sigur Rós. Good luck Jónsi.
