‘Poupée de cire, poupée de son’
This song is a perfect '60s pop song. In the background, it's got an orchestra with flutes, strings and brass etc., layer upon layer, well arranged to build up a kaleidoscopic castle of sounds, not dissimilar to Phil Spector's 'Wall of sound', but only sounds clearer and more clever. In the background, it's got an orchestra with flutes, strings and brass etc., layer upon layer, well arranged to build up a kaleidoscopic castle of sounds, not dissimilar to Phil Spector's 'Wall of sound', but only sounds clearer and more clever. And on top of that is a French girl with an innocent voice, singing a catchy melody…so, how can you resist that? To be a perfect '60s pop song, you got to have an edge. This song is written by one of the slyest man in pop, Monsieur Serge Gainsbourg, so, as the title, which could be translated as 'Doll of wax, Doll of sound' suggests, the song is actually about the hollow and materialistic life of a young pop diva. With a dark undercurrent like that, this catchy and jaunty song has got its edge. hear it here..: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b46d_zk5CKI

So this is the debut EP from REM, and it has already got the distinctive sound the band has throughout their early years: Peter Buck's jingle-jangling guitar riffs, as it has been said many times before, is very much influenced by The Byrds, and at the same time the rhythm section has a steady post-punk feel, and then there's the mysteriously murmuring vocals from Michael Stipe---even if you catch the lyrics, you are not likely to catch the meanings. Once these elements melt together, it sounds unusual. They got the beat, you can dance to it, but then you really don't know what the songs are about (with titles like 'wolves, lower', and 'gardening at night'): are they happy, sad, or angry? But once the music drives you into the groove it just doesn't matter, you'll realise that that's just their way of dong things: they might see the world around them like that too: happy, sad or angry? Maybe it's all there, or maybe it's just somewhere in between. 'Wolves, Lower' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLh9rs5JXyE

专辑背景: The Byrds在录完那张乡村摇滚经典'Sweetheart of the Rodeo'后, 两位主力Gram Parsons和Chris Hillman先后离队. 本来The Byrds就以擅长把各种元素混合在一起而闻名, 来到The Flying Burrito Brothers, 很多民谣, R and B甚至爵士的元素都混进去了. Once upon a time you let me feel you deep inside..' 三年多后(讽刺的是Gram在'sin city'里头唱到'you got three years to pay...')Gram更是再出了几张卖不太好的唱片后不明不白的死了.

So this is the debut ablum by a little band called Buffalo Springfield, whose members include giants like Neil Young and Stephen Stills. Stills's songs are unique in the way various elements like folk, country and r&b are melted together: Take the hit 'For what it's worth', it's got an r&b influenced beat, but then you hear Stills sings in a moody, reflective style assoicated with folk, and so you got something speical---the Americana sound (before the Band championed it on their ablum 'Music from the big pink'). On the other hand, Young's songs are mostly simple folk-rock tunes, yet they have a dark and haunting quality which Stills's songs lack. 'Flying on the ground is wrong', which is sung by Richie Furay instead of Young himeself, is a fine example, it's delicately catchy but with lyrics like 'If I'm bright enough to see you, you're just too dark to care.', which mirrors the songwriter's angst (demonstrated further on later albums like 'Tonight's the night'). The contrast between Stills and Young gives this ablum lots of different dimensions, but then these two could really play togther, the amazing guitar works in 'Go and say goodbye' says it all. Anyway, a great album, a must have for any Young or Stills or CSNY fan. 'For what it's worth' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3VrvG7286c
