一个人静静地听着Elliott的声音，在车里，在旅程中，然后爱上了寂寞。
后来，读了Gus Van Sant的采访，查阅了无数资料，了解到了他和我最爱的这位导演的千丝万缕。两个来自Portland的少年，两个同样独立的艺术家，两个挣扎地作着自己的人，难怪，Gus是Elliott最忠实的歌迷，每一部Gus的电影，都有着Elliott Smith音乐中那样淡淡的基调。
灰黄的天空，有着急速翻滚着的云彩。一望无际的麦田里，有着一栋孤寂的小楼。
1997年，因为Gus少有的一部比较主流的电影Good Will Hunting 而获得奥斯卡最佳原创歌曲提名的Elliott，与天后Celine Dion一起，站在奥斯卡颁奖典礼的舞台上。这个腼腆的波特兰少年穿着白色的西装，在所有的娇颜华服面前喃喃轻唱。
多么Elliott又多么不Elliott的一刻啊。
自此之后，一切都脱离了轨道。而他也在五光十色的迷幻世界中窒息了。
有人说悲剧源于毒品。因为毒品，沉迷于可卡因的Elliott才走上了这条道路。
其实，这个世界，本身就比任何磕药的幻觉更加疯狂，更加失去控制。
‘From a Basement on the Hill’是Elliott最后的遗作。在还未完成这部作品之前，他就选择了离开。整张专辑的后期制作都是由他的母亲和女朋友决定完成的。
而这里面，最让我彻底陷入的，就是那首King’s Crossing。有人说，这是Elliott的Suicide Note，有人说，这是他在自杀的前一天录的。无论怎样，这无疑是Elliott的释放，是Elliott的自由，是他对生活作出的最后本能的挣扎。
如同Pink Floyd般的沉长开头，接近两分钟的器乐和概念人声，拉开了这首黑色挽歌的帷幕。
