Miriam Yeung is not the first pop star I knew when I was a teenage. When I was in the middle school, I caught a bug of Sammi. I loved to sing the song named Beautiful Forever, because then I still had a boy’s voice and friends said that my voice was like Sammi’s. But at that time, I could not understand the song, as I have not tried to fall in love with others, neither to love someone secretly in my mind. I didn’t know what love was actually. But I had a friend that time, who loved Miriam very much. So one afternoon, I borrowed her walkman and listen to the album named Miriam. I could not understand the situation described in the song Sister. At that time, I loved the song King of Sorrowed Songs very much, because of the euphonious melody. But at that time, I didn’t have any deep impression on Miriam. In high school, I went to another city and left most of my friends. Then one day, when the girls connected one CD player to the sound box in the classroom, I heard the song Sister again. Suddenly, all my happy days with my friends in middle school flashed in my mind. The departure of friends described in the song was in sympathy with my leaving my friends. So tears flooded my eyes then. I remembered I asked one of my friends to sing the song Shining to me. She sang the song with pleasure. But after that, she asked me why I wanted to listen to the song. I just answered that one of my friends loved Miriam very much. “Boy or Girl?” “A girl,” I said. Her face turned pale immediately and said nothing to me that day. Suddenly I understood that the song was about love, and I could not ask a girl to sing a love song to me just because another girl loved the song. I could not understand Miriam’s songs even when I was a high school student, because at that time hardly any time could be spared in the love affair. But I was quite familiar with Miriam’s songs because I had some friends that are fans of her. And CDs were always in my luggage on Sundays, because I borrowed them from my friends. Love affairs will always be the themes of pop songs. Some years ago, as Miriam was still an unmarried woman, she always sang for the singles. And she acted like someone who did not care about being single and even enjoyed being at such a state. So the situation was just like the one I was in when I was a bachelor candidate student. Bachelor has two meaning, and both fit me well when I was in my college. So I always used Miriam’s songs to help me pass the lonely days and nights. “I have parents who care about me, so I don’t need to be disturbed by love affairs. Yesterday should be forgotten, so I could remember tomorrow better.” Miriam sings in her song named The Ways I Lead My Life. Music is a very powerful thing, because it can even change your values and your comprehension of the world or the life. Thus, that’s why one of my e-pals named Flying Upwind could tell the characteristics of a person from his/her idol. Sometimes, when we are in the same situation of that described in a song, sympathy will arise to make us have better comprehension. And at rare situations, a song could even help you to make decisions. As the group Twins sing, “Only love affairs could teach you how to sing this love song.” To tell you the truth, I have not fallen in love with anyone before and even not now. But I do have someone in my heart, and I could understand some of these love songs to some extend. It is these songs that help me to understand more of my situations and know that what’s going on with me. Now, Miriam gets married with Ding, but I still love her voice and her songs. Because now, she can tell me what people should do when they are married. Maybe next time I should talk more about the album but not my own stories.

Yiko Zeng is a girl who has drawn almost all the youngsters’ attention this summer. When I was still enjoying a summer camp in July, I knew her from Xiaonei. Many friends shared a video in which people say that Yiko took part in the Super Girl and sang the song Red Bean. Almost at the same time, Khalil Fong’s hit song Red Bean was sent on the air. So the so-called Yiko’s video attracted me, though the so-called she did not do a good job in singing that song. Then Super Girl 09 almost reached its climax when Yiko got in the Final 10. Many young people watched the show just for Yiko, including me. I don’t know why I want to see her in the show, but when she came out, I just laughed a lot. Yiko was just a funny figure or a droll for me to pass those intolerable sultry summer nights in Hangzhou. But surprisingly, Yiko was eliminated at the first contest. I don’t know why they selected her to compete with Yu Kewei. But I know when Yiko failed in the PK round, because all of us know that Yu is an excellent contestant in Super Girl 09. When Yiko no longer appeared on the show, the fierce discussion of the show in the BBS of our university stopped immediately. Then I went back to Guangdong and never watched the show again. During the contest, Yiko sang many wonderful songs whose melodies are said to be composed and whose lyrics written by her own. Though she does not have wonderful singing skills, I shed tears for her songs, especially when she was out from the contest. I talked to my friends that if Yiko sang different songs in the show, she would have been on the stage for a longer time. But she sang the song of Leo for many times. Then people will be bored by the song. Anyhow, in this new album, Forever Road, Yiko has 10 songs, including some new ones. And the songs attract me more, because the songs are polished in the studio and they are more pleasant to listen to. The first one, The Most Angel-Like, is an old song which was on the air in July. It is a sad song for the girl in love with a boy who is not a wonderful prince charming. The girl loves and hated the boy at the same time. This feeling will be common among the young, because young people always want to find the perfect sweetheart. But of course on one is perfect in the world. Thus, Yiko sings for the lonely girls who are still waiting for the perfect prince. Forever Road is about the journey of life. I think Yiko is good writer because she can make many common things alive in her lyrics. But there is also a trend to cut the flaming adjectives from the sentences. Yiko definitely catch this trend. The White Autumn gives a vivid description of snowing falling down with the yellow leaves in autumn. The Trolley Plan is about the activities of the young nowadays. I think most of the songs in this album are for the lonely ones. As loneliness is a trend in this fast-pace society, I think, the theme of this album will be attracted to the young ones. As to the melody, I love the song of How Long Can I Be a Child very much. At the beginning, a humorous tune comes. And Yiko sings like an innocent child who does not like the complex life of the adults. But the song of Leo is not as good as the one at the live show. I think the faint respiration of Yiko is very lovely, because it can make her feel innocent and child-like. But the polished song, Leo, makes Yiko’s voice less like her original one. And the lyrics’ order change as well. Because I have repeated the original song for many times, I can not get used to this new one. You Are My Best Friends is also a good song. Maybe Yiko writes about the poet Hai Zi in this song. Hai Zi is a very good poet who is famous for the poem of Facing to the Sea, Flowers Bloom in the Warm Spring. Yiko repeats a sentence from this poem, “I face to the sea”, which is very famous. Thus, the lyrics can be remembered at once. In all, this album is a good one for the lonely people in this modern society. If you are alone in this Christmas Day, I recommend you to listen to this song. You will know that there are ones who are also alone in the world. But there is a saying that, “You will not know what is sadness when you are young, but in order to write new lyrics, you will pretend to be sad.” I don’t know whether Yiko is such a lyric writer who pretends to be sad. But I think the young people nowadays are lonely, because of the fast development of technology and the wide spread of the internet. Besides, the economic depress, the blooming price of the flats and the increasing rate of people out of work will also attribute to this kind of sadness.

Truth be told, when it comes to singing, ability is not always the most crucial thing. The proper amount of attitude, emotion and charm go a long way to replace the vocal shortcomings. Especially for a pop singer, a charming outer appearance may count more. Niki is such a pop singer, who does a very good job in movies and soap operas, and now comes out to be a singer. I still remember that I was attracted by her at the first time I saw her in the movie “The next station, Tianhou”. In that movie, Niki played the role of pop singer who didn’t know how to sing; but with her beautiful appearance, she was given lots of opportunities. However, in the end, she was replaced by Kim Taishi, played by Charlene Choi, who sang quite well. Niki does a very good job in acting because she has a sense of humor and a good appearance. But in singing, it seems that she lacks some talents, because her voice is a bit weak. However, with some make-ups, she can sing an entire song with charming sweet voice. In this new album, she sings six songs of love. All six songs are well selected, which are written by some famous composer and lyrics writers. So we can know that BMA bets a lot on her. The first song, <猜灯谜>, is for dancing. The light tempo and nice rhythm attract me most. When I listened to this song, I just wanted to throw my arms and legs, and dance with Niki. With it be the first song, people can be lured by this beautiful lady’s sexy voice. Then a slower song comes. <越怕越怕追> is a love song, whose lyrics are written by Lin Xi, one of the most famous lyrics writers in Hong Kong. The tune is good, but Niki lacks the ability to express her emotions well. <轻飘飘> is a typical Fang-Datong-type song. Most of the songs written by him are in this kind of light tempos. Anyhow, Fiona sings better than Niki, because Fiona has a sense of rhythm, but Niki just sings a song. I think, <信> and <天梯> are more nicer than <越怕越怕追>, no matter in the emotion expressing or the tunes. Maybe the lyrics written by Lin Xi is too abstruseness for Niki to understand. However, these three songs are in the same type, some light love songs. The last song of this Cantonese album is a Mandarin song. Some what odd, but it is also a love song. Love songs are almost the same no matter in what language it is written. To be a pop singer, Niki has the advantage of charming outer appearance. But we all know that she just sings for fun. What she cares more is her acting field. So we shall not expect too much upon her. What’s more, the cover for the first edition is a little ridiculous, but the one for the second edition is a very beautiful photo of Niki. So please choose the one you love.

如今市场低迷，如果不是很有把握的歌手，公司都不会给他花钱出一张大碟，因此很多歌手只能发个EP试试，看看市场的反应，然后再做打算了。因此像周吉佩这样的新人，虽然外形不错、实力非凡，但是也只能出个EP先玩玩了。虽然英皇公司向来就是用钱来给旗下歌手堆出人气的，但年初的阿娇等人的事件让公司亏损不少，所以也只能省省钱留给钟舒漫、容祖儿等人气偶像了。 虽然是EP一个，不过周吉佩用心十分，希望能开个好头。的名字让人一看就知道这位是位新人，因此评价的时候也能够偏点心，不要太过苛刻了。 总的来说，这张EP是个很好的开始。前面四首讲得都是学生的事情，应该能够获得大家的共鸣；而最后一首和陈皓恩合作的国语歌，是某电影主题歌，周吉佩的普通话很不错，而且歌的旋律也很好。 如今市场上很少见到讲学生题材的歌了，于是我很怀恋Twins时代的那些讲学校恋爱的《女校男生》、《眼红红》等。也许现在的九零后已经不买这些学生帐了。不过台湾的青春电影依旧火热，因此学校学生题材也许还是可以有点市场的。 《家教》是林夕填的词，有些励志，不过还是讲那些如何去接受现实，“凡事有便有”，“懂足够，不贪求”等，其实跟他给千嬅的《一叶舟》在主题上有些类似。林夕真的很会“看开”，不过跟年轻人说“看开”也许有些悲观。但是整首歌讲得就是老人家给年轻人的教导，也许讲得有点道理。 《第二次初恋》《睹物思人》《留班同学》讲得是年轻人的事情，很有学生气息。不过周吉佩本人也许还是个学生，即使不是也刚离开学校不久吧。我觉得《留班同学》更加有学生气息，“训导”“包尾”“劫匪”“打机”等，一看就知道是坏学生了。而《睹物思人》节奏感更强，也许为了填补旋律的不足吧。《第二次初恋》周说是自己的经历，不过好像没有唱出感情。 《祝福以后》我觉得是一首很不错的歌，不过放在这里好像跟主题有点不搭配。但是EP嘛，就是玩玩而已，所以就放在最后，让人家看到另外一个周吉佩吧。周和陈的普通话很不错，这在香港乐坛也许是个优势吧。而且旋律很有感觉，两位唱得也很动人。周吉佩还有点美声唱法的味道呢，可见他唱功还是可以的。作为EP，这首歌的存在不会对其影响很大。但如果作为专辑来说，放首不伦不类的东西在最后，可能还会减分呢。 Twins很难再一起唱学生歌了，Sun Boy’z也不够人气，看来周吉佩的出现，可以让英皇收复学生主题这块失地了。不过学生歌不能一直唱，阿娇阿Sa也会变成女人，所以英皇也许真的要给周吉佩做个好好的计划，让他能够从男生一直红到成为男人吧。
