Orgasm Denial/Torturing Nurse - “Real Noise: From Cannibalism To Karaoke” (Noisoke Records/Shasha Records 2011) Orgasm Denial and Torturing Nurse are both pretty prolific noise artists hailing from the far way land (from me at least, I live upstate NY [upstate meaning 1 hour upstate from NYC]) of China. This 7 inch is sort of a dream combo for me, mostly because both artists are so sick. I’ve even had that pleasure of doing a split cassette with Orgasm Denial with my Wolverine Carcass project. The record itself looks sooooooo awesome. The artwork is spectacular. As for the “tunes” Orgasm Denial bring 5 or so minutes of his signature thrash and burn noise style. Lots of skree and other such noise violence. Good stuff. It must be mentioned however, that this record is a lathe cut by the mysterious Peter King out of New Zealand. Having had experience with getting lathes cut by him, I know the limitations of the medium. On this record they show quite clearly, as any low end is just not on the record. I know OD’s sound and it is a much fuller range of frequencies and the bottom end is just gone on this record. I don’t know why I’m saying this, because the record is limited to 30 copies so you are never going to get one anyway. Maybe I’m just saying that getting lathes cut by Peter King is a waste of money because they sound awful. Anyway, onward with the review! Torturing Nurse’s side is interesting. To me it sounds like a tribute to The Gerogerigegege, namely their “Life Documents” 7 inch. On that platter it’s the sounds of someone jerking off while listening to dance music. TN’s track on this 7” is the sounds of people fucking while a constant drum machine is playing. Not what I was expecting from Torturing Nurse, normally they are total noise destruction, but whatever, still and interesting record. I said earlier this is limited to 30 copies, so don’t even bother trying to get yourself a copy. I don’t even know how I got one. Well I do, but it wasn’t easy. Well, it actually was easy, it just cost me a lot of dough (28 euro! GOTDAMN!). All in all a solid little platter. -Log. PS: Since this is a lathe its SUPER DUPER clear! [Torturing Girl - ‘Torturing Girl’ 12” LP on Urashima, hand numbered edition of 119] Torturing girl is a collaborative effort by Shanghai extreme noise unit Torturing Nurse and the Italian Urashima label head Cristiano Renzoni, known for his work in the HNW project Alo Girl and other collaborative works with Richard Ramirez. Side A demonstrates the familiar tantrum of Junky & Youki’s output in Torturing Nurse, making their contribution an overpowering characteristic of the track. While implied, Renzoni’s presence is not too discernible in this track when considering the textures employed in most Alo Girl tracks, the style difference is definitely an introductory experience to what else Cristiano can do. Regardless the three piece makes an intense feedback driven assault with mauled electronics and deafening blasts of uncaring rage. Side B is slightly more concentrated and displays patternless experimentation in what could be considered to be more of a jam than an actual thought out track. As previously mentioned it is a highly focused track void of emotion, cold and structureless wandering deep into bleak atmospheres. The packaging is in Urashima fashion with deluxe silver silk screen on black cardboard sleeve. The insert is especially nice with its 8 pages of grey scale prints of an erotic novel. Active since 2004, the loose group/collective of Torturing Nurse, hailing from Shanghai, China, has released more than 100 limited edition cassettes, CDRs and vinyls, establishing themselves as the vanguard of the burgeoning Chinese noise scene. With their latest effort (I’m sure by the time you read this they’ve released a new album), entitled “Il Comunismo Doveva Morire” out in the US-based Mind Flare Media, one of their more widely available releases to date, they easily persuade any hesitant noisehead that they’re really capable of delivering some serious stuff. The album contains a 73-minute single track (although I think that it’s composed of violently edited shorter tracks) that’s as harsh as it gets, resembling Torturing Nurse’s sources of influence, such as Hanatarashi, Hijokaidan, Incapacitants, MSBR and CCCC to name a few. You get all the mixture of junk sounds, feedback, white noise, screams and heavy effects, but this doesn’t mean that it’s a worthless and inconsistent hour. In fact it’s surprising how they can keep a certain dynamism and a constant flow of energy so that you don’t get bored at all and on top of that, it’s not a mere copy of other noise godfathers – on the contrary, Torturing Nurse have created their own distinctive voice, which is something so hard to achieve in the contemporary pool of noise acts. Or why miss-appropriation has now firmly shifted to China might be the explanation of the ability of Torturing Nurse to take over the incoherence of noise from the great masters of Japan, and that in there inconsequential screaming, noise and feedback is what they do so well, whether from design, pastiche or naivety, it doesn’t matter, all is symptoms without any traces, illness without disease, psychoanalysis of sanity, this is a culture which was never part of the monotheistic religions. Judaistic calling which engendered the enlightenment and guilt, Freudian Oedipus or Marxist theory ,T.N. is a superficial image, a simulacra of the west without foundation or introversion, it has nothing to attack or demolish, so is pointless, nothing to solve or cure, the name itself silly lacking any psychosis of western introversion, those bare chested lot who miss mommy, no this is noise as noise for noise from noise and nothing else besides, and 74 minutes which is never enough.
