Following on from the band’s debut Playing Boyfriends & Girlfriends back in 2005, Manning lays those familiar soothing electronics across this new one. Once the studio tricks have swum up into the subconscious, a Zen-type feeling soon overwhelms the listener. The sounds oscillate between hypnotic background score to front of stage in trademark Holidays On Ice style. Frente songbird Angie Hart again delivers the right tones and spread of vocal across this record. She takes centre stage on most of the tunes found her. Manning cares little for popular opinion on how to fit within the mainstream arena, moving to an entirely different beat. However, No Roses Grow On A Sailors Grave is the unfortunate exception. On this number, Manning serves up a tired and formulaic throwback to the Britpop era, with no great innovation. Hart soon steers the record back on its intended trajectory. The wafer-thin vocal is all over the basic percussion fold and ‘spooky guitars’ provided by Drones lead guitarist Dan Luscombe. It adds a warm, Mazzy Star-type rhythm and sentiment to Out Of The Mud. That said, it’s a safe song, heard a million times before – but it still works. Funny that. Ah, the power of the melancholy slow-burner.
