The Nationalist spirit, of course, doesn't lie only in Sibelius' orchestral works (symphonies and Violin Concerto) familiar to us. He composed for the piano, usu. lovely miniatures echoing Grieg's Lyric Suites. He wrote orchestral works and even opera(s) on Finnish legends and folklores. These, though not in a langauge as universal as heard in his symphonies and Violin Concerto, certainly have more unique characteristics, which is, as I think, nearer to the core of what we refer to as Sibelius' Nationalism. There're works for chorus, notably for male choir a cappella. There're also a few chamber works. Narrative doesn't have to be grand and large-scale. This list is still under construction, which perhaps will take very long time to finish, for I'm yet beginning to explore Sibelius' minor works. I have yet to find more than half of the CDs listed here. Moreover, I have yet to know about Sibelius the man. Reading small volumes of biographies doesn't help much, and there're simply many problems concerning his "Nationalism", if this be the focus of this list, e.g. should we take in his songs in Swedish? Therefore, I sincerely welcome suggestions and discussions and hereby express my gratitude in advance. Presently, chamber works have not been added.
